Each brave tester who enters the Diablo III beta does so equipped with some rags, dull weapons and not a coin to their name. This is very sensible. There are already many users trying to figure out how to make gold and money in shady ways from this game. If new characters came with some lucrative items it would be relatively simple to create a new character, sell their items and pocket the gold, over and over and over again.
This doesn’t concern those of us who are going to use every trick we can to legitimately make money from the auction house economy but it’s good to know that manipulation of starting gear won’t be a stepping stone to an inflated and false economy.
On the down side you begin with nothing. How do you go from that to thousands of gold? Well, personally I’ll be aiming for millions of gold and I’ll tell you why: in a very short space of time (less than 24 hours) I’ve turned 0 gold into close to 25,000 gold… but I’ll be honest with you (and myself): for a Diablo bank balance, that’s nothing impressive.
Good? Bad? Meh.
So why mention it? Well this is the beta stage: The waters are shallow (fewer buyers and sellers); prices are erratic (not always a bad thing – I’ll come to that in a later article); some successful sales are accompanied with 0 gold (bugs eh?); and most importantly there’s a bug which will stop you from playing, levelling and even buying or selling. This is caused (somehow) by auction house testing. So if you use the auction house regularly you are far more likely to see this and see it more often.
Spot the bugged sales
As you can imagine, given my interest in the Diablo III auction house, I am suffering from this issue A LOT. The 24 hours that have past have largely been locked out. I’m watching my auctions come back to me from those testers lucky enough to avoid the bug or those testers who don’t visit the auction house often.
I’d love to know how much I would have made if I could have reinvested some of the medium to big sales I’ve made (rare items) or even just relisted the items that didn’t sell.
